For professionals working across older people’s housing, retirement living and sheltered housing, recognising the signs isn’t always straightforward. Abuse may be hidden behind assumptions about family relationships, caring arrangements, finances, health or simply what is considered “normal” within a long-standing relationship.
Frontline staff working in sheltered housing and independent living settings can sometimes find themselves dealing with challenging or confrontational situations - particularly when lone working.
Knowing how to recognise potential risks, communicate effectively and respond safely can help staff feel more confident when faced with demanding situations.
